Spring Plant Prep at Richland Chambers Lake
Spring is in full swing, bringing warmer temperatures and the perfect opportunity to refresh your Texas garden.
Now is the ideal time to plant vibrant flowers that will thrive throughout the season. Cool-season annuals like geraniums, petunias, snapdragons, stock, and sweet alyssum add instant color to flower beds and containers. For warm-season blooms, wait one to two weeks after the last freeze before planting marigolds, impatiens, begonias, zinnias, and coleus.
As the month progresses, look for pentas, lantana, purslane, moss rose, and angelonia to arrive in stores, providing even more variety for your garden.
To ensure your plants get the best start, use well-draining soil. These specially formulated soils help regulate moisture levels, improve drainage, and provide essential nutrients for strong, healthy roots. Proper soil preparation, along with regular watering and fertilization, will keep your flowers flourishing.
In addition to flowers, consider adding blooming shrubs and perennials like azaleas or hibiscus for long-lasting color and fullness in your landscape. When selecting plants, always match their sunlight and water requirements to your garden’s conditions. Choosing a mix of plants with different bloom times will keep your garden looking fresh and colorful throughout the year.
Spring is also the perfect time for garden maintenance. Prune spring-flowering shrubs, vines, and trees after they finish blooming to promote healthy new growth. Evergreen shrubs should be trimmed before new leaves emerge, and trees can be pruned to remove dead or low-hanging branches. However, avoid pruning oaks in the spring to prevent the spread of oak wilt fungus.
Happy Spring gardening!
